The Workers' Compensation Commission's current lease is running out at the 117,000-sf building at the intersection of Ben White Boulevard and Interstate 35. The new lease would run from October 2003 through September 2013. Proposals have to be made to the Texas Building and Procurement Commission by June 4. The state has put out several other requests for space, but those deadlines have passed.

The Southfield building lease is one of many the state has ending in the next year or so, but accounts for a quarter of the nearly 450,000 sf up for renewal. The state leases 3.2 million sf in Austin, most of it office space.

The Shidler Group, based in San Diego, owns the Southfield building, one of its three Austin properties. It sold the Exchange building in northeast Austin earlier this year. It is 100% occupied by the state.
