The four casino owners have been the principal players in contract negotiations with the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders' and Beverage Dispensers' Union Local 165, which began on April 10. After more than a month of negotiations, the union members have agreed to five-year contracts. Meanwhile, their employers have agreed to provide hourly wage and benefit increases of $3.23 ½ over the five-year duration of the contracts. Reaching these tentative agreements marks a major step in avoiding a June 1 strike at the hotel-casino properties owned by the four companies.
The unions are now left to negotiate with the smaller companies that own the 18 remaining casinos, which employ members of Union Local 226 and Union Local 165. Members are prepared to strike at those casinos if negotiations are not ironed out by the time the collective bargaining agreements expire on May 31.
