The date of opening was recommended by the Chinese lunar calendar, which was an appropriate touch since the hotel is close to Oakland's Chinatown and the Asian influence is evident in its decor.
The Oakland Downtown Courtyard by Marriott is a $24 million, five-story hotel that has 162 guest rooms, and features an outdoor Asian garden. Located at 988 Broadway, on the corner of 9th Street, the hotel features a swimming pool and three 1,500-sf meeting rooms. Construction for the property began in May 2000.
It will house some 40 employees and according to the Convention and Visitors Bureau, it will generate an estimated $484,000 a year in room taxes for Oakland and $11.3 million for Oakland businesses.
