CityPlace covers eight city blocks formerly occupied by the Long Beach Plaza, an enclosed mall opened in 1982 and closed in 1999. Construction is already underway on three big box retail anchors to the CityPlace project: a 125,000-sf Wal-Mart, 58,000-sf Albertson's and 27,000-sf Ross Dress for Less.
This is PCS Development's first urban mixed-use project. PCS/Cal-Mor, an affiliate of PCS Development, will be the general contractor for the five multi-use buildings. The project will be developed in conjunction with Developers Diversified Realty Corporation (DDR), the master developer of CityPlace. DDR will own the ground floor retail and PCS Development will own the apartment portion in each building.
Each building will house three stories of apartments over the retail space. Parking for the retail and apartments will be in existing city-owned parking structures attached to each building. The apartments will be ready for occupancy in spring 2003. The ground floor retail will be a mixture of restaurants and retail tenants that are compatible with the apartments and in keeping with the Pine Ave. section of downtown Long Beach.
