Five-Building Mixed-Use 'Village' Underway

LONG BEACH, CA-The $75 million CityPlace project's retail component is underway with a spring 2003 completion date. The 221-unit residential-over-retail development includes 450,000 sf of retail and restaurant space.

LONG BEACH, CA-LA-based PCS Development, Inc. broke ground Wednesday on a 221-unit luxury apartment project that is part of Long Beach’s $75 million CityPlace, a mixed-use development that will create a new urban village in the Downtown area. The project will consist of five separate buildings constructed over ground floor retail space of 450,000 sf.

CityPlace covers eight city blocks formerly occupied by the Long Beach Plaza, an enclosed mall opened in 1982 and closed in 1999. Construction is already underway on three big box retail anchors to the CityPlace project: a 125,000-sf Wal-Mart, 58,000-sf Albertson’s and 27,000-sf Ross Dress for Less.

This is PCS Development’s first urban mixed-use project. PCS/Cal-Mor, an affiliate of PCS Development, will be the general contractor for the five multi-use buildings. The project will be developed in conjunction with Developers Diversified Realty Corporation (DDR), the master developer of CityPlace. DDR will own the ground floor retail and PCS Development will own the apartment portion in each building.
