GlobeSt.com has learned from sources who asked not to be identified that the law firm, which is headquartered at Four Times Square in Manhattan, is on the market for 50,000 sf of space. Ken Siegel, managing director of Jones Lang LaSalle, which is representing Skadden Arps in its office search, confirmed that the law firm is in the midst of a search for office space that would house "various support functions."

Siegel says that the law firm has three buildings it has identified in Westchester County and one property in Northern New Jersey. While Siegel would not reveal the properties under consideration, sources say that Skadden Arps is "focused on downtown White Plains" in connection with its study of the Westchester County office market. The building believed to be on the top of the list of Westchester properties is the Reckson Metro Center in downtown White Plains. The law firm is said to be considering 50,000 sf of space that was put on the sublease market by Metromedia Fiber, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 20. The company occupies approximately 110,000 sf in the high-rise building at 360 Hamilton Ave. Another property said to be in the running is 445 Hamilton Ave., part of the White Plains Plaza complex owned by MetLife.

The property in Northern New Jersey is believed to be in the Jersey City area.

"We're probably within 30 days of having a solution selected," Siegel notes. He adds that Jones Lang LaSalle and Skadden Arps are discussing a number of "operational and financial issues that will factor into the decision."

Local real estate sources say that representatives of Skadden Arps have met with officials from Westchester County and the City of White Plains to discuss the availability of possible incentives. Siegel had no comment on whether those talks have been held. Officials with Westchester County's Office of Economic Development also had no comment when asked about whether it has held discussions with Skadden Arps.

Skadden Arps has 23 offices around the world, and employs approximately 1,700 lawyers who practice in more than 40 areas of law and industry specializations.

The law firm recently represented Merrill Lynch in its settlement with the New York State Attorney General over alleged conflicts in Merrill Lynch's stock research. The firm is also involved in several major corporate merger deals, including representing Citigroup in its proposed $5.8 billion acquisition of Golden State Bancorp.
