The latest transit-oriented community proposal is for the Brickyard Park and Ride lot in Juanita. The goal of these projects, in which apartment complexes share space with park and ride lots, is to boost transit use and cut down on traffic congestion in the region. The public is encouraged to provide input at an open house gathering on Thursday.
The first such project, the Village at Overlake Station, marked the nation's first housing development above a bus station. The popular park and ride lot was closed for two years while a $40 million, 308-unit housing complex was built above it in December 2001.
Preparation for a similar transit-oriented development is under way at the downtown Burien park and ride lot at 149000 First Ave. SW. King County is already in the preplanning phase for reconfiguration of passenger loading at the lot to enhance safety and efficiency. Part of the lot reconfiguration will include creating parcels previously unavailable for mixed-use redevelopment. The goal of the joint city/county effort is to create a transit facility next to a redeveloped downtown center. Plans now call for a town square, community theater and galleries, conference center or cinema, a district court building and police station.
Burien City Council approval of the final layout for the new transit center is expected by mid-2002. The county will then begin development of request-for-developer proposals for the adjoining mixed-use element to complement the new transit facility. The county expects to begin soliciting proposals for both the transit facility, including structured parking, and adjoining mixed-use development by late summer 2002.
Those who wish to attend the open house on the Brickyard project can do so between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Northshore Public Health Center, 10808, NE 145th St. in Bothell. The Brickyard Park and Ride lot is located at 15530 Juanita-Woodinville Way Northeast at Interstate 405 and Northeast 160th Street. It currently has 247 parking spaces on site, but the county also owns undeveloped land adjacent to the lot.
