To date, some 20,000 tons of soil contaminated by burn ash, lead, hydrocarbons and petroleum byproducts have been removed from the site.
Environmental Business Solutions has been performing the work in the35-block area called the East Village. The Centre City Development Corp., the Downtown redevelopment arm of the city, recently approved $1.75 million to extend contracts to allow work to continue through the end of the month.
The area includes a seven-block site that will make up the new San Diego Padres Ballpark, and the 26-block Ballpark District.
In addition to the 20,000 tons of soil hauled out of the area, about 1,300 tons of soil has been deemed regulated waste and set aside for future reuse as fill material, resulting in a cost savings of about $100,000.
One group of properties, bound by 12th and Imperial avenues and 14th and K streets, will comprise "Tailgate Park," a surface parking lot for the ballpark.
Another group of properties bounded by Island, 10th and 11th avenues and J Street, will house a parking structure, with residential units on the southern and western sides.
The work is slated for completion by fourth quarter of 2003.
