Construction Starts on $400M Upstate Energy Plant

BETHLEHEM, NY-Although several major energy power plant projects in New York State have either been cancelled or postponed due to the fallout from the Enron scandal, construction has begun on a $400-million facility in a suburb of Albany.

BETHLEHEM, NY-Construction has begun on the new $400-million Bethlehem Energy Center project here. The new facility, expected to begin operation in 2004, will replace the aging, 400-megawatt Albany Steam Station, located on the Hudson River in the Town of Bethlehem.

A host of state and local dignitaries were on hand for the June 10 groundbreaking of the 750-megawatt plant being built by PSEG Power New York Inc.

Compared to the Albany Steam Station, the new plant will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 97% and sulfur dioxide emissions by 98%, state officials said. Further, the new facility will only use about five million gallons of Hudson River water per day, compared to the 500 million gallons per day used by the Albany Steam Station.
