Although the size and design are not finalized, a spokeswoman for the DEP tells GlobeSt.com the building will open in February 2003.

The building will be modeled after the DEP's Cambria Office in Ebensburg, PA in Cambria County. The Cambria property opened this April and is the first building in the US to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold rating from the US Green Building Council.

DEP's south central regional office in Harrisburg, the state capital, is also a green building. According to a printed statement from DEP, Pennsylvania ranks fourth among all states in the number of projects registered to seek LEED-certification.

Materials for these buildings are selected on the basis of their recycled content and the energy used to produce them. Among the materials used are recycled structural steel and roofing shingles and fly-ash-content concrete.

David Hess, secretary of the Pennsylvania DEP, says, in a printed statement, "Green buildings not only make sense for the environment, but they save taxpayers real dollars in operating expenses and improved employee productivity.
