The project involves a $17.9-million educational facility that will be used to inform the public about alternative-fuel vehicles. Serving as the gateway project for the City Heights Redevelopment Area, the new RTC Center will feature an alternative-fuel vehicle showroom and serve as an alternative fuel demonstration, fueling and operations center, according to Steve Bimson, executive director of the San Diego Environmental Foundation.
Cross Architects designed the structure, which is being built by Lusardi Construction. Center officials say it is the first facility of this kind in the nation.
SDEF will operate the AFV Education Center there. The foundation's educational mission is being funded in part by a $1.4 million grant from Ford Motor Co.
The facility is scheduled to open in May of next year.
