Dougherty represented Kmart's domestic and international divisions. In 2000 and 2001, he obtained approvals for 22 new Kmart stores and expansions in the United States with a capitalized value of $400 million.
Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Jan. 22, 2002. Since then, it has closed 283 stores in the U.S. For the 13 weeks ended in May, 2002, the retailer suffered a net loss of $1.45 billion. Net sales declined 8.4%.
