$40M Office Building Planned for Jail Site

PHILADELPHIA-Allegheny County will build a 200,000-sf, eight-story office building in Downtown Pittsburgh at the site of the former county jail annex. Demolition of the annex begins in May 2003 and occupancy of the offices is set for late 2005.

PHILADELPHIA-The 13-story Allegheny County jail annex in Downtown Pittsburgh, which was vacated in 1995 when a new jail was opened, will be demolished to make way for construction of a $40-million, 200,000-sf, eight-story county office building. The county will consolidate numerous operations in the new facility, and, as part of the construction plan, also refurbish the county morgue.

Consolidation is expected to bring savings on rents in various current Downtown locations.

County forensic labs will occupy two floors of the new building. Among the other departments to be consolidated there are services for aging, behavioral, health, drug and alcohol, mental health and retardation, community relations and administration.
