Since last year, city officials and residents have been pushing for Trader Joe's to develop a store in the area. City officials presented a market analysis, proving that the city had a significant customer base to support the store. Residents signed petitions encouraging the store to come to the city.

This month, the city got its wish. Trader Joe's will develop an 11,000-sf store on the south side of El Cerrito Plaza, near Long's Drugs. This lease brings the plaza, which is owned by Regency Centers, to 90% occupancy.

The development company is still on the lookout for the former Albertson's grocery store, a 33,000-sf site, and an additional 8,000-sf of retail and office space throughout the plaza. El Cerrito's monthly office rents vary from $1.75 - $1.95 NNN, depending on the size and location.
