The 282-bed Medical Center East draws patients from five Birmingham-area communities that are experiencing high population growth. They are: Clay, Leeds, Moody, Pell City and Trussville.
The proposed expansion calls for construction of a new 230,000-sf medical office building for physician offices and clinics, the addition of four patient floors and expansion of the current emergency service department.
Eastern Health filed a certificate of need with the State Health Planning and Development Agency in Montgomery, AL. On condition of anonymity, an Eastern spokesman tells GlobeSt.com his firm does not expect opposition to the plan.
Eastern also operates Medical Center Blount and St. Clair Regional Hospital in the Birmingham market.
