Catellus is heading a redevelopment project at the former East Housing site and Fleet Industrial Supply Center that will turn 215 acres of former military property into a mixed-use development.

The sites are located north and west of the College of Alameda—an area that Catellus believes to be ideal for a retail center. The city has approved Catellus' plans to develop 1.3 million-sf of offices and about 500 housing units. However, today's shaky office market has prompted the developer to reconsider its plan.

Catellus proposes rezoning approximately 40 acres of property slated for office space into retail space, and following through with the rest of the office and housing project.

However, at a recent public meeting, residents and merchants expressed concern that the new center would force small shops to go out of business. The proposal will go before the Planning Board this month.
