ALAMEDA, CA-Catellus Development Corp. has proposed building a new shopping center near the College of Alameda, despite the fact that the proposed site has been specifically slated for office use.

Catellus is heading a redevelopment project at the former East Housing site and Fleet Industrial Supply Center that will turn 215 acres of former military property into a mixed-use development.

The sites are located north and west of the College of Alameda—an area that Catellus believes to be ideal for a retail center. The city has approved Catellus’ plans to develop 1.3 million-sf of offices and about 500 housing units. However, today’s shaky office market has prompted the developer to reconsider its plan.
