Governor George Pataki revealed both moves yesterday, stating that when the Downtown space is identified it will house up to 880 state employees. The Harlem space will be occupied by 271 employees from two state agencies beginning in 2004.
Late last month, the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance moved 286 employees back into their Downtown offices at 22 Cortlandt St. The workers had been displaced as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks when the state lost or was forced to vacate 1.8 million sf of state agency office space.
The Harlem Center project, located on Malcolm X Boulevard between 125th and 126th streets east of the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building, is currently under construction and is the result of a joint project between Forest City Ratner Companies, Abyssinian Development Corporation and the Empire State Development Corporation.
Retail space will be located on the first three floors, occupying 90,000 sf. The State plans to lease floors four and five for the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (41,000 square feet) and floors six though nine for OTDA (83,000 square feet).
