The 20,000-sf building will be located in Rochester, the firm's business operations headquarters city, and its performance will help company officials decide whether to further expand its Rochester operation. Genencor says it will retain all 200 of its Rochester employees and that the new health care business unit facility will create up to 100 high-tech sector jobs.

The facility, which must meet FDA requirements, is expected to be operational in two years. Possible future plans may include the development of commercial manufacturing and the potential for up to 500 new jobs.

"We could have sited this new facility in other areas of the US or abroad, but decided that New York State would be the best place for us to focus our future in the burgeoning human health care business," says Carole Cobb, senior vice president of global manufacturing for Genencor.

The company is eligible to receive Empire Zone benefits based on its investments and job creation. It may also apply for a $550,000 capital grant from Empire State Development.

Genencor is the latest biotech company to take advantage of New York hospitality. Sear Brown, also of Rochester, recently chose three New York State locations--Albany, Binghamton and Melville--to create Design Centers of Excellence in Biotechnology.

In February, Pataki revealed the establishment of the Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park in Geneva. In addition, Bristol-Myers Squibb has established its Center for Biotechnology Development in Syracuse.

Genencor develops biotechnology products for the health care, agri-processing and specialty chemicals markets. The firm maintains its corporate and R&D headquarters in Palo Alto, CA and has manufacturing facilities throughout the world.
