Fees have remained relatively stable for the past year. At $125 a month, San Diego was in the middle between the highest rate in New York and the lowest average rate in Fresno. The average monthly rate of cities surveyed was $147, or 1% lower than 2001.

New York's Midtown area, at $450 a month, posted the highest monthly average rate for unreserved space. The lowest rate was $38 in Fresno.

San Diego's 50,000 parking spaces in the CBD are either in vacant lots or on the street.

The city has launched construction of public parking structures unattached to facilities such as Horton Plaza. The 500-space Park it on Market at Market Street and Sixth Avenue next to the Gaslamp Quarter opened at the end of 2000. The city has plans for another 4,500 parking stalls over the next several years.
