Hargreaves, a firm comprised of planners and landscape architects with a broad range of urban design experience, will lead a design team to revise the South Lake Union Master Plan update, develop a design and prepare construction documents for high-priority funded elements, and monitor construction.
The team will work with Parks staff and the Maritime Heritage Center at South Lake Union to develop a scope of work for the park. In 2000, the Navy turned the 12-acre waterfront property over to the city, which developed a master plan for the redevelopment project.
The Pro Parks Levy approved by Seattle voters in 2000 includes $5 million to plan and implement improvements to South Lake Union Park. Total development costs for the park are estimated to be between $28 and $45 million.
The park's redevelopment will include additional open space, walkways, a wetland, a new wharf. The old wharf, which was damaged by the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and is being rebuilt as a Historic Ships Wharf, will provide long-term moorage for historic vessels. A newly constructed Maritime Heritage Center will feature cultural, educational, and recreational maritime exhibits and activities.
