The project will include a six-story, commercial building and a public plaza. The building will feature ground-floor retail and restaurant space with office space above. The team has not yet determined exactly how much square footage will be allotted to each use.
The Mariners purchased the site last year from the Public Facilities District. According to city officials, the city is reviewing several applications for the First Avenue area, including an auto mart, hotel and Krispy Kreme donut franchise. The area is attractive to new businesses because of the high visibility brought about by the stadium.
Construction could begin as early as next summer and end a year later. However, the city expects some opposition from residents, who have expressed concern that a new development will significantly increase traffic and congestion in the area.
