The City Council will seek public testimony next month on whether to apply for a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The city would use the Community Development Block Grant Section 108 guarantee loan to buy the office building at 1551 Broadway.

The building contains 42,804 sf of total space and 35,767 sf of net rentable area. Attached to the building is a two-story, 75-stall parking structure. The City's Business System Improvement Project, which will replace the City's outdated customer information, human resources, financial and work management computer systems, will occupy three floors of the building.

The American Cancer Society currently occupies 5,590 sf, and the General Services Administration-U.S. Public Defender occupies 5,601 sf. The building is listed on the City of Tacoma's Historic Register.
