Area's Economic Barometer Still Backsliding

AUSTIN-Air cargo traffic, a measure of economic activity, was off 7% in the latest year-to-year comparison at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. But, June's trade shows just how tight conditions are: 276,804 pounds versus 2.4 million pounds in June 2001.

AUSTIN-Traffic at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport continued to post year-to-year declines in June as the impact of the high-tech slowdown and post-Sept. 11 travel drop-off lingers. Passenger traffic was down 11% and cargo traffic was off 7%.

Air cargo traffic, one measure of economic activity, totaled 23.6 million pounds in June, down from 25 million pounds in June 2001. The year-to-date decrease has been 23% to 136 million pounds from 176 million pounds. International air cargo took a severe drop from June 2001 with 276,804 pounds this year in comparison to 2.4 million pounds.
