The 370,000-sf marketplace still needs a number of permits, Eastlake Development Co. officials say. Construction is scheduled to begin in September and the center could be open by next July. Target and Lowes Home Improvement are the proposed anchors. The Eastlake Village Marketplace could also include four sit-down restaurants, a food court and other retail businesses. In all, the center will house about 35 tenants.
Eastlake, one of the hot new areas for residential development in South San Diego County, is two-thirds complete with its proposed 8,900-home community.
The property was once going to be the site for a Kaiser medical center. The hospital and an accompanying commercial center were approved by the council in 1992, but Kaiser decided not to build there.
Eastlake acquired and repositioned the proposed project. The council changed zoning designations for about 16 acres to allow some light manufacturing and assembly.
