Tacoma School District board members have given the go-ahead to purchase Broadview Apartments for $3.6 million, according to the agreement hashed out this week. Officials also have the option of eminent domain, should that agreement not be honored by apartment owners. The 50,000-sf apartment complex is located at 506 Second St., adjacent to the school's technology annex.

Current plans call for a gym and a performing arts center to be built once the apartments have been bought and demolished. Construction on the project, estimated to cost $85 million, is scheduled to begin in 2004 with completion in 2006.

The district will allow apartment dwellers three to four months to vacate the building, beginning Aug. 1. Funds for the purchase will come from a $450 million bond approved by school district voters in 2001.
