NEW YORK CITY-Governor George Pataki on Friday revealed plans to build a 100,000-sf Center for Excellence on Long Island at the State University of New York Stony Brook. The $230-million project is expected to break ground by year’s end.

The facility will be funded by more than $130 million in private industry and venture capital support and technology investment led by Computer Associates, Symbol Technologies and Reuters. The latter firm will not be contributing financial assistance per se, but rather will offer the center its technological expertise, a Reuters spokesman tells GlobeSt.com. The state will provide $50 million in funding to support construction, and an estimated $50 million in federal support is anticipated over the next five years.

Located on the Stony Brook campus, the center will comprise an emerging wireless technologies lab, a cyber-security lab, a computer networking lab, a computational sciences lab, cleanrooms and workforce training rooms.
