Report: Casinos' Upsides, Downsides

SAN DIEGO-County administrators release a 300-page report on the impacts of Indian gaming. It shows a mixed picture. Five more casinos and other Indian projects have opened since that first report in 2000.

SAN DIEGO-As a new Las Vegas-style casino opens in North San Diego County, county officials have released a report showing that Indian casinos are bringing both economic benefits and concerns about traffic, water and growth.

County administrators released the 300-page report after more than a year of preparation. The update to a less comprehensive study released in 2000 provides an overview casino and other tribal development impacts. Five casinos and other Indian projects have opened since that first report, transforming the county into the nation’s fastest-growing region for Indian gaming.

A $125 million Harrah’s hotel-casino is opening today on the Rincon reservation and four of the county’s nine casinos are expanding.
