Public Schools Officials Rethink Land Sales

PORTLAND-Reacting to concern from city officials and neighborhood groups, Portland Public School officials agree to reconsider the process for selling off several dozen acres of parks and sports fields to help make up budget shortfalls.

PORTLAND-The Portland Public Schools Board is revising plans to sell off several dozen acres of parks and sports fields to help make up budget shortfalls. The Board now says it will arrange for greater input by citizens of the potentially affected neighborhoods before adopting a policy in October.

The original plan was to sell off some 60 acres of park and sports fields adjacent 25 schools that would then be developed for residential or commercial use, depending on zoning. Many residents of affected neighborhoods oppose the plan. Others simply want to make sure some thought has gone into which properties will be sold and what the consequences will be to the surrounding neighborhoods.
