PHILADELPHIA-Winterthur, the 1,000-acre former private estate of Henry Francis du Pont, gives a conservation easement to the Chadds Ford, PA-based Brandywine Conservancy. Known primarily for its 60-acre garden and vast collection of American antiques, the estate opened to the public in 1951 and gained federal tax-exempt status as a museum in 1979.

The donation represents the conservancy’s fourth-largest land tract and one of the largest single tracts of preserved land north of Wilmington, DE.

Founded to preserve and protect American artistic, natural and historic resources, principally in the Brandywine region, the conservancy has similar easements on approximately 37,000 acres in the rapidly developing Brandywine Valley.
