The purchase was coordinated by the Washington, DC-based Trust for Public Land, an open-land advocate that has acquired 1.7 million acres nationwide.
Douglas County raised funds for the open-space transaction through proceeds from sales taxes. The Trust was interested in the property because of its natural attraction and watershed impact.
Mullen retains 125 acres adjacent the property to develop high-end residential lots that border the open-space preserve.
In a printed statement, Chris Cooper of Mullen called the transaction "an excellent example of public/private partnership to promote open space preservation with both an environmental and economic benefit to the parties involved."
