The Sheraton's Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa, with 500 culturally themed rooms, a 17,500-sf Native American Adjii Spa, two 18-hole golf courses and a 1,000-acre Koli Equestrian Center will open Oct. 1 on the 372,000-acre Gila River Indian Reservation off Interstate 10 about 20 miles southeast of the city. The resort, owned by the Gila River Indian Community, will be located adjacent to the community's Wild Horse Pass Casino.

One month later, the 735-room Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, featuring an elaborate water park, a 20-treatment room spa and a 27-hole golf course, will open on the Scottsdale and Phoenix border more than five months ahead of schedule.

John Scovell, president and owner of Woodbine Development which built the Westin Kierland, said a combination of luck and skill helped shave five months off the build time. "It's a tribute to the construction and design team," Scovell tells GlobeSt.com. "We were better prepared with our plans when this project started, we had excellent support from all the contractors and vendors, we had a great labor supply and we had the support of the city."

Scovell said the resort is located adjacent to Kierland Commons, which offers some of the country's top retail outlets and restaurants set in an upscale urban village just a short walk from the resort. The hotel, with 60,000 sf of interior function space and 100,000 sf of exterior courtyard function space, also will have two hotels, a "high energy" cocktail bar located in a saloon modeled after an old silver mine and a lobby bar and fast-food area.

The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Spa & Resort will feature authentic Native architecture, a 2.5-mile replica of the Gila River, 100,000 sf of indoor and outdoor event and meeting space and native inspired cuisine developed by Chef Janos Wilder.

Both resorts will be operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide.
