Carpenters Reject Convention Center Labor Plan

PHILADELPHIA-The local chapter of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners rejects a recommendation by the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority to merge six unions that work at the center into three. The move threatens support for the center's expansion.

PHILADELPHIA-The city’s carpenters’ union has rejected a recommendation designedto cure labor problems that have plagued the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The recommendation by locally-based Econsult calls for a merger of the six unions that work at the center into three.

Ed Coryell, who heads the carpenters’ union, called such a merger unprecedented. He says the union was willing to renegotiate its convention center contract, which is not set to expire for two more years. He suggests a new contract call for hospitality training with mandatory certification, and “zero tolerance for hostile behavior” among union members.
