Durst-Led Water Taxis may Prompt Bklyn Waterfront Redevelopment

NEW YORK CITY-As the New York Water Taxi company puts the finishing touches on its seven-stop water service, the group decides to add an additional seven stops for 2003. One potential benefit of the Douglas Durst-led initiative is that it may prompt a mixed-use redevelopment near the Fulton Ferry and Greenpoint landings in Brooklyn.

NEW YORK CITY-Construction is complete on three of the initial seven 20-ft by 30-ft docks for the New York Water Taxi’s three-boat 2002 schedule, set to launch Sept. 24, and the group plans to have a total of 14 docks and six boats in place by April 15, 2003. Company president and CEO Tom Fox tells GlobeSt.com that one potential benefit of the initiative, led by developer Douglas Durst, is a mixed-use redevelopment near the Fulton Ferry and Greenpoint landings in Brooklyn.

“We’d like to see the linking of that area to Manhattan open the door to redevelopment on the waterfront,” Fox tells GlobeSt.com. “This could open the area up much like the New York Waterway service did for New Jersey.”

Developer Douglas Durst chairs the company, headquartered at 55 Broad St. in Manhattan. Recent Durst developments include a 300,000 SF telecom/datacenter project on West 57th Street between 11th and 12th avenues.
