88-Acre Tech Park Still on Hold

DETROIT-A prospective bio-medical tenant is getting anxious, saying it is being courted by other technology zones in Kalamazoo and Lansing, areas that are more aggressive about building new projects.

DETROIT-The future anchor of the 88-acre Wayne State University Research and Technology Park, a proposed development in Downtown, says he’s anxiously awaiting the construction of the project. Asterand Inc., a bio-technology firm, is now based in Karmanos Cancer Institute in the city, leasing space from the non-profit temporarily until the first phase of the tech park supposedly opens next fall.

Asterand has been a temporary tenant for exactly two years, says Randal Charlton, the chief executive officer of the company. He’s impatient to get a sign-in announcement from the university, adding the city is losing the battle with other Michigan communities in building its bio-technology areas.

Charlton says he has been in contact with the consultant of the project, and hopes to learn more this week when the construction will move forward.
