These are some of the reports from the Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Western Regional meeting recently in Hawaii, where operators of Orange County and Inland Empire resorts and hotels were among the speakers who analyzed how their businesses coped with the changes in travel patterns after Sept. 11.
Among them was Blaise Bartell, general manager of Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, who said that Surf & Sand lost only two pieces of group business as a result of 9/11 and the resort has been running at 93% average occupancy for several consecutive months. Year to date, Bartell says, Surf & Sand Resort's occupancy is running 8% to 10% higher than the previous year. Bartell says that after Sept. 11, leisure travelers chose resorts they could drive to conveniently and some who normally would have stayed at a local resort only for a weekend instead stayed longer at local resorts.
At The Palms at Palm Springs, marketing director Cathy Cluff said bookings actually increased at The Palms and revenues have increased by 3%, which she attributed to guests spending more money while on site. The results from the referred Hotels & Resorts meeting are the latest in a series of hotel and resort industry reports on how the industry has fared in the year since the Sept. 11 attacks.
A recent report by an Orange County hotel consulting firm, Atlas Hospitality Group of Costa Mesa, said Orange County was tied with San Diego County in the number of hotels under construction with 11 hotels comprising 2,154 rooms, although the number of new hotel rooms planned in the county has dropped by 25% in the past year.
The report said overall hotel revenue was down about 11% in Orange County, with some hotels choosing to keep rates higher in return for lower occupancy, while others have lowered rates but boosted occupancy.
