Following the attack, which took place just before 10 a.m., federal officials decided to shut down all government buildings, given around 340,000 federal employees the option to go home immediately. Federal parks and monuments have also been shut down throughout the region. Commercial office buildings downtown and in nearby suburbs have also closed early, resulting in massive gridlock through the region.
