WASHINGTON, DC-Shortly after the suicide flights that flattened New York’s World Trade Center, a plane crashed on a helipad adjacent to the Pentagon, causing a portion of that military complex to implode. At least 22 injured persons here were transported to Virginia Hospital Center for treatment, and the Navy Public Affairs confirms that there were deaths at the Pentagon.

Following the attack, which took place just before 10 a.m., federal officials decided to shut down all government buildings, given around 340,000 federal employees the option to go home immediately. Federal parks and monuments have also been shut down throughout the region. Commercial office buildings downtown and in nearby suburbs have also closed early, resulting in massive gridlock through the region.
