The terminal extension is needed to handle an extra 10 million passengers a year.
But the consent by the local council comes at a time of a raging national debate over where more runways should be built given that airline traffic in Britain is expected to double to 500 million passengers a year by 2030.
In southeast England the government has proposed building a new short runway at BAA's London Heathrow, one of the world's busiest international airporta, and up to three runways at Stansted. A decision on new runway capacity is expected early next year.
