Construction on the property began in July 2001 at an estimated hard construction cost of $38.46 per sf. The facility has 265 loading bays and has a staff of 700 .
The property is one of 77 Wal-Mart distribution centers worldwide. The Shelby location was chosen over four others in the state. The retailer plans to expand the site to also serve Wal-Mart stores in Tennessee.
Wal-Mart operates 1,600 regular Wal-Mart units, 1,179 Wal-Mart Supercenters, 517 Sam's clubs, and 36 Neighborhood Markets throughout the United State and 1,211 retail units abroad. Total company sales for the year ended Jan. 31, 2002 were $217.7 billion.
