The spire is just one of two Wright designs that will be incorporated into the Promenade project being built by the Peterson Group of Phoenix near Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. A second design of a bank building, created by Wright in 1947, will serve as a visitors center and will house the offices of several non-profit agencies, including the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Arnold Roy, a senior architect with Taliesin, tells GlobeSt.com that the spire, a steel pinnacle sheathed in copper verdigris that will give off a soft blue glow reflective of the Arizona sky, was designed by Wright in 1957 for the Arizona capitol but was never built.

The bank design, which will house the 10,000-sf visitors' center on three levels, will feature a circular mezzanine with a translucent dome to bring a soft sun glow to the building's interior. The building will also include a drive-up window, a design concept originated by Wright in 1947 but considered impractical by bankers at the time, Roy said.

Construction on both structures are set to begin within the next few months with completion slated for the fall 2003. The Promenade's first phase, which consists of 300,000 sf of office and retail space has already been completed.
