Birmingham, AL-based Doster Construction Co. is the general contractor for the $28-million project.

The Catholic medical center closed its doors for lack of funds 13 years ago, and the state assumed ownership of the property, which remained vacant until now.

Bob Moore of Doster tells GlobeSt.com the project will reach completion by year-end 2003, but that some state agencies may be able to occupy the space prior to completion.

The facility will house the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and contain offices for the state highway patrol and the departments of correction, pardons and paroles, and public safety. Andy Nelson is project manager for Doster.
