Leesburg is 45 miles northwest of Downtown Orlando.
Properties that will become part of Leesburg's 24 square-mile portfolio (15,360 acres) are the 900,000-sf Lake Square Mall and the two million-sf Lake-Sumter Community College campus. About 90 commercial/retail properties are being annexed.
The annexation is expected to generate estimated annual revenue of $485,590 by 2004 but the anticipated cost to Leesburg for additional fire, police and park services will be at least $1 million, city commissioners have been told. They are reviewing studies on how the city's general revenue fund could make the annexation cost-effective.
