"We committed to hire the majority of the staff from the local neighborhood and we have hired over 100 individuals from within the Brentwood community to work in our new store," Giant president and CEO Dick Baird notes. "In addition, the store was constructed under an agreement we signed with the city so that a majority of the construction workforce was comprised of local contractors from within the District of Columbia."
The store also includes a pharmacy, an increasingly common feature in Giant locations. Outside of industry leader CVS, the grocery store chain is among the largest drug store competitors in the city, having commanded a market share of 10.8% in 2001.
