The projects total $9.7 million and will house residents earning between $12,000 and $34,000 a year. Construction is slated to begin Oct. 9.
The Eliza B. McCabe Townhomes, 41 rental units at South 23rd Street and Yakima Avenue; andHillside Gardens, 26 apartments at South 17th and G streets will surround Guadalupe Gardens, a community centerpiece.
Intercommunity Housing, a nonprofit corporation, has received partial funding for the projects from the City of Tacoma through the Tacoma Community Redevelopment Authority. Aloan from the state of Washington's Housing Trust Fund and a grant from the Sound Families Initiative, a program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, also will help finance the projects. In addition, the multifamily housing units qualify for the City's Multi-Family Tax Credit.
Members of the Hillside neighborhood worked with Intercommunity Housing and the City of Tacoma to preserve Guadalupe Gardens. For nine years, citizens were allowed free use of the land to grow their fruits and vegetables.
When the landowner wanted to sell, residents gathered to form the Guadalupe Land Trust and now own and manage the property. The group has worked with Intercommunity Housing to help launch the multifamily project.
