Gdansk to Get New Port

LONDON-DCT Gdansk is preparing to build a container port in Gdansk, Poland, subject to permission from the Polish treasury ministry and ministry of infrastructure.

LONDON-A UK port operator is close to going on site to build Poland’s biggest deepwater container port at a cost of $170 million. DCT Gdansk will not disclose the source of its funding, but says permission from the Polish Government is all that stands between it and a container port that could handle 500,000 TEUs a year within seven years. Gdansk already has some provision for containers but most of the country’s traffic goes through Gdynia.

One of GCT Gdansk’s founders, Robert Sinclair, is confident that the company will have the necessary consents by the end of the year, and the two-year build time will start then. The port will be modelled on Thamesport, though Sinclair stresses that Gdansk has a more reliable rail service than Thamesport.

Sinclair believes that Gdansk will co-exist peacefully with Poland’s current container facilities at Gdynia. He hopes, too, to add a logistics park and a ferry terminal. DCT Gdansk is in negotiations with the Mayor of Gdansk for permission to build the logistics space.
