"Medgar Evers College is an outstanding symbol of the ongoing renaissance taking place at the City University of New York," Pataki said at last week's event. "This wonderful new facility will reflect that renaissance, and will provide continued opportunities for the students of the Medgar Evers community who are seeking to improve their lives and the lives of their families."

The first $15.1 million in state funding is already in place and is earmarked for design costs. CUNY's capital plan is administering the cash in partnership with the City of New York.

Construction of the flagship facility is expected to begin in 2004, following completion of the design specs. The building will house Medgar Evers' School of Science, Health and Technology. Along with laboratories, offices and research space for faculty and students, the structure will also include classrooms, computer labs, a multipurpose dining facility and the college's radio and television studios. It will be located on Crown Street.

"When completed, thousands of students will have the benefit of studying in modern laboratories and computer assisted classrooms as well as other amenities for learning," says CUNY Trustee Vice Chairman Benno C. Schmidt, Jr.

The institution's main buildings currently are located on Beford Avenue and on Carroll Street in the old Brooklyn Preparatory High School.

Opened in 1971, Medgar Evers is the youngest of the CUNY colleges. It became a four-year institution in 1994 and currently offers 18 degree programs and a complete career ladder in nursing. The college enrolls more than 5,300 degree students and more than 4,000 continuing education students.
