The Austin Convention Center's expansion, which doubled its size to more than 900,000 sf, was cited by the alliance for its design and economic impact. The bigger convention center is to allow Austin to attract conventions of national scale.
The Downtown Austin Alliance says the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the second public project, is an "architectural monument worthy to rest near our state capitol." It also has an economic impact on the downtown, attracting visitors from Central Texas and around the state. The downtown group also recognized Rick Crawford, executive director of the State Preservation Board, who brought the project in on time and under budget.
The private project award winner is 300 West Sixth, CarrAmerica Realty Corp.'s 442,000-sf building. Officially opened in January, the granite and limestone building was the first major CBD office structure 10 years. Austin's PageSoutherlandPage was the architect.
PageSoutherlandPage and architect Lawrence Speck won an Impact award for its design of the Computer Sciences Corp. project. The Downtown Austin Alliance says the two-building complex "respects the historic Schneider building and Town Lake vistas."
Plaza Lofts won for downtown housing, a new category. The project will help revitalize the area around Republic Park. The Sutton Co. developed the 12-story project, which opened this year.
Eddie Safady, president of Liberty Bank, won the individual/organization award for his commitment to downtown. The group highlighted Safady's redevelopment of a Congress Avenue commercial property into his 6,700-sf residence.
An emeritus award was bestowed on the heritage marketing department of the Austin convention and Visitors Bureau. Under the direction of Betty Baker, the department has promoted the downtown's historic features and cultural tourism. The winners will be recognized at an Oct. 23 luncheon.
