Don Altwein, senior vice president for Dallas-based WorkPlace USA's project management, tells GlobeSt.com that the company currently is overseeing the removal of asbestos at the old San Antonio hospital and will begin demolition soon on the 50-year-old building. Ground-breaking on a two-story, 65,000-sf, 75-bed medical facility will begin in first quarter at 2303 SE Military Dr. on the Texas Department of Health campus.

The project will take about two years to complete. The cost of the building project remains undetermined, Altwein said.

WorkPlace USA beat out about 10 other contenders to seize the project management duties, which will gives control over the hospital's design and construction. Joshua Engineering Group Inc. of San Antonio is overseeing mechanical, electrical and plumbing management. The contract represents the first time the state has outsourced management on a project of this size, Altwein noted.

The hospital, which replaces the city's existing 40,000-sf facility, will include 75 negative air pressure isolation suites, two nurse stations and ancillary support functions to make it one of the largest and most modern facilities of its kind in the world. It also will be equipped for the specialized treatment of tuberculosis. The Texas Center for Infectious Disease, operated by the Texas Department of Health, is the primary facility in the state for tuberculosis treatment and is positioned right across the street from Brook Air Force Base.

Mijares Mora Architects Inc. of El Paso is the architect. The general contractor will be selected in the fourth quarter, according to Altwein.
