"It's called expansion," Burt Weisberg, the company's chief operating officer, tells GlobeSt.com. "The company has grown tremendously."
The new location will replace four plants next to one another out of which the company operates now. The four plants total about 50,000 sf. The company also uses about 30,000 sf of outdoor space.
The new, single-building headquarters, at Okeechobee Road and Northwest 107th Avenue, will total about 87,000 sf. It also will house the company's apparel store and administrative offices.
Operating from four separate plants is challenging and difficult during unfavorable weather conditions, Weisberg says. "A lot of times, it's absolutely pouring here," making it difficult to operate, he says. Having everything under one roof will make things considerably easier, he says.
The estimated construction cost of the new facility is $4.2 million. In addition, the company will buy the land from the developer for $1.1 million when the facility is finished next spring, Weisberg says.
Cigarette Racing Team, named after company founder Don Aronow's first racing boat, Cigarette, started in 1970. The company makes boats that start at about $300,000.
The new facility will move about 100 employees to Hialeah Gardens. It is expected to add $25,000 to the city's tax base.
The state-of-the-art building will have brand new machinery and will be laid out in a more efficient manner, Weisberg says. These characteristics will help the company increase profits and employees, he says.
The company's current location east of U.S. 1 on Northeast 188th Street in Thunder Alley, where the company began, is being redeveloped into a condominium community.
